Program Director | Tulsa Artist Fellowship (Tulsa, OK)


Established under the auspices of the Tulsa Community Foundation (TCF) by the George Kaiser Family Foundation (GKFF) in 2015, the Tulsa Artist Fellowship (TAF) enhances the local art scene by recruiting and retaining both visual and literary artists to Tulsa. Tulsa Artist Fellows inspire the community by sharing their unique artistic perspectives and inject creative culture into Tulsa’s thriving art scene.

Tulsa Artist Fellowship (TAF) provides unrestricted stipends of $20,000 for the first year of fellowship and, in most cases, free housing and studio workspace in the thriving Tulsa Arts District. By providing support, artists receive the financial stability and resources they need to pursue their craft. While recruitment is focused on artists residing outside of the Tulsa metropolitan area, local artists are considered for the program based on exceptional merit and promise. In addition, the program will reserve some fellowship positions for Native American, Alaskan Native and Native Hawaiian artists.

The Tulsa Artist Fellowship currently has a staff of four, 34 fellows and an annual operating budget of approximately $2.3 million.

Job Purpose

The Program Director for Tulsa Artist Fellowship will lead the staff in the growing the program. This position will be instrumental in utilizing community relationships and development to increase awareness of Tulsa Artist Fellowship. The program director will be responsible for management of both artistic programs and financial needs. This position will balance creative expansion with developing new funding while setting strategic goals for the organization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Program Director Responsibilities:
• Work with TCF/GKFF Staff, the Advisory Board and Program Manager to fulfill the organization’s mission to recruit & retain artists, writers and other cohorts to Tulsa, OK
• Communicate, work with & encourage the fellows on a regular basis
• Serve as the organization’s ambassador by hosting, attending program and community events
• Use background in Arts to connect with the fellows and the community to expand TAF’s current offerings, including new innovative programming
• Develop and manage an annual staffing plan, including volunteers, which will include:

  • hiring
  • developing
  • coaching

• Planning, implementing and reviewing strategic goals & operating plans for growth in the organization
• Developing new sources of fundraising through foundations, grant-writing and interactions with donors to facilitate growth
• Creation & distribution of communication materials about the program
• Use metrics to track success of financial, strategic & creative goals
• Create and implement annual budget including:

  • development, analysis and reporting
  • accounting for any information required by the Advisory Board

Other duties may be required.

Requirements & Qualifications

Education and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Arts or Non-profit Management, Arts Education or related field
• 10 years’ experience in Non-profit management
• Or equivalent combination of education, training and experience
• Experience or knowledgeable passion for the Arts

• Strategic thinking – Ability to use strategic thinking to identify areas of both weakness and opportunity and create solutions
• Financial acumen – including ability to forecast, budget and basic accounting
• Management – ability to develop & manage operations, programming & staff
• Self-motivation – results oriented, takes action, committed to continuous learning and growth
• Ability to move to Tulsa (relocation assistance provided)

Other Skills and Requirements:
• Proficient in MS Office Suite, specifically Outlook, Word & Excel
• Ability to work flexible hours to accommodate programming & community events on some evenings and weekends

Physical Demands:
Requires sitting, walking, climbing stairs, talking (by phone, to individuals and in groups) and keyboard manipulation. Most work is done indoors with minimal noise; must occasionally be able to focus and remain calm in crowded settings with multiple distractions.
